Ameet K. Nagra is Senior Counsel with Emerzian Shankar Legal Inc., providing advisory and transactional legal services to the firm’s education sector, private business and non-profit clients.

For the firm’s private business and non-profit clients, Ms. Nagra is a skilled contract drafter, and advises clients on business formation, governance and dissolution matters for various types of business entities. She also has substantial experiencing advising on and settling demands for alleged violations of wage/hour, PAGA, and discrimination and harassment claims.  She has developed effective policies and procedures for managing a wide-range of governance and employment matters, including employee handbooks.  She is experienced in defending EEOC and DFEH pre-litigation claims of harassment and discrimination, and has represented employers on unfair labor practice charges before the Public Employee Relations Board. 

For the firm’s education sector clients, Ms. Nagra is experienced in handling labor/employment and student conduct matters for K-12 and higher education clients.  She has specialized expertise regarding leave rights granted by the California Education Code and in advising on disciplinary matters for unionized employees.  She also advises on free speech and academic freedom rights on campus, as well as student expulsion/dismissal proceedings. Ms. Nagra is experienced in advising management on negotiations with labor unions negotiator, bargaining proposals and related media communications.  Ms. Nagra is also skilled at advising on the nuances of CalSTRS and CalPERS law compliance.  

Ms. Nagra is also well-trained and has significant experience in conducting state and federal law compliant school and workplace investigation, including Title IX, harassment, discrimination and whistleblower investigations.  Importantly, Ms. Nagra has specialized training in trauma-informed investigation techniques.

Education & Career Experience

Ms. Nagra attended the University of California, Los Angeles graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in History and subsequently earned her law degree from the University of California, Hastings School of Law where she also graduated magna cum laude.  During law school, Ms. Nagra earned several Witkin awards for academic excellence.  Her published note, “A Higher Protection for Scholars Faced With Defamation Suits,” was cited by Judge M. James Lorenz in the United States District Court case Critical Care Diagnostics, Inc. v. American Association for Clinical Chemistry, and continues to be cited today by practitioners across the country.  She also interned during law school in the chambers of the Honorable Jennifer R.S. Detjen of the California Court of Appeal, Fifth District.  Once admitted to practice, Ms. Nagra worked as a civil litigation associate in employment law matters at a local medium-sized law firm.  She then transitioned to a transactional and advisory practice at a large state-wide education law firm, where she served as legal counsel and a trained investigator to education sector clients.  She joined ES Legal Inc. in November 2018.

Community Connections

Ms. Nagra is a Central Valley native.  She grew up in Selma and graduated from Sunnyside High School’s magnet program.  Ms. Nagra enjoys traveling abroad frequently, and has visited nine different countries.  Ms. Nagra is happy to bring her skills to bear in the Central Valley communities she grew up in.  She is committed to using her education, training and energy to help schools and businesses in Central California thrive.
